The fourth stage of Amgen Tour of California took the riders from San Jose - Modesto a stage of 195.5km. At the start of the race a group of riders went for the attack. Lars Boom (Rabobank) formed a breakaway with Jurgen Van de Walle, Rob Britton (Bissell), Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly), Scott Stewart and Davide Frattini (Team Type 1) and Ryan Anderson (Kelly Benefit Strategies).
With 25km to go the breakaway group’s advantage had fallen to around 30 seconds but the work of the chasing peloton was disrupted. There were several attacks out of the breakaway but the group came back together and their advantage increased again to a minute. With 10km left, Boom went on the attack again and maintained a slim advantage of 20 seconds on the peloton. Firstly Van de Walle and then Britten were caught and with 7km to go Boom had to concede defeat and was swallowed up by the peloton.

Team Saxo Bank's Argentinean pushed himself past sprinter favorite, Mark Cavendish (Columbia) but they were both surprised to see Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) outsprinting both of them.
Andy finished in 87th place with a bit more then a minute to the winner. In the overall classification Andy stands in place 52 with 17.44 to the leaders.
