The 167 kilometer long second stage of Tour de Suisse from Ascona to Sierre ended in a duel among the sprinters where Heinrich Haussler (Cervelo) turned out to be strongest of the bunch. The single category 1 climb on the stretch appearently was not enough to drop all the sprinters.
Team Saxo Bank's Fabian Cancellara is still in the overall lead of the race after winning yesterday's prologue. Teammate and powerful Swede, Gustav Larsson is fifth while Jakob Fuglsang is eighth overall.
Andy finished in 50th place. In the overall classification Andy stands in place 22 with 00:24 seconds to the leaders. Andy: "Stage 2 done in TDS nasty climb in the end! Fabian keeps yellow!Good job saxoboys special Mr O Grady! gr8 comeback after a broken collarbone".
Tomorrow, a maybe even greater challenge is waiting for the peloton as the stage ends with an uphill finish after 196 kilometers in hilly terrain.
”We can hardly complaint about the stage result or the overall classification with three guys in the top ten. It shows that we have several cards to play on different occasions and we are still not bound to one single captain. Unfortunately, today's stage demanded us to do a lot of work and especially, Stuart (O'Grady) put in a huge effort considering the fact he has jus recovered from a broken collarbone. However, we won't hold on to the jersey at any cost as there are opportunities to take it back later,” said sports director Kim Andersen after the stage.
