For the fifth and final stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia, another four man break spent the day dangling off the front of the peloton. Among the escapees there was a GC danger, David Bernabeu (Andalucia Caja Granada) who was only 31 seconds down on the classification table. His presence in the break ensured it was not going to be allowed to survive to the finish. Nevertheless, the peloton timed the catch pretty tightly, leaving it only until about three kilometers from the finish to absorb the break. In the end, sprint master Oscar Freire (Rabobank) out-kicked stage two winner Jonathan Hivert (Saur Sojasun).
Race leader Markel Irizar (RadioShack) crossed the line in the 33-man front group to maintain his slender one-second general classification lead over Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Omega Pharma-Lotto). The 31-year-old Spaniard assumed the red leader's jersey after stage two and held it through to the end for the biggest victory of his career and his first-ever in a stage race.
Andy finished in 37th place and ended in the overall clasification in place 81 with 24:25 minutes to the leader.
