Andy and Jakob Fuglsang demonstrated increasingly good shape as they were both active in the front group on today's 217 kilometer long queen stage of Tour of California from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake.
The two were accompanied by Matthew Wilson (Garmin), George Hincapie (BMC), Thomas Rabou (Team Type 1), Stef Clement (Rabobank) and Jason McCartney (Radioshack).
The pack was challenged with a set of seven categorized climbs which took its toll on the bunch and soon Stef Clement (Rabobank) was dropped from the front group and with 60 kilometers to go, they had a gap of 6 minutes to a highly reduced pulled by Team Columbia.
Team Saxo Bank's Jakob Fuglsang pulled the front and every time he dropped to the back of the group they lost time to the chasing pack with Tony Martin (Columbia) at the front.
But with 38 kilometers to go, both Team Saxo riders dropped back to the following group of favorites and soon after, the rest of the front group was caught. Marc de Mar (Unitedhealthcare) immediately launched a counter-attack and quickly created a gap to the overall favorites. He was joined by Matt Wilson (Garmin) but they were not able to keep the chasing bunch behind.
On the finish line, Peter Sagan (Liquigas) was absolutely invincible and he took his second stage win of the race in convincing style. Michael Rogers (Columbia) is still in the overall lead.
Team Saxo Bank's Jens Voigt finished 9th on the stage. Andy finished 14 minutes later together with team mate Fuglsang in place 29. He loses 2 places in the overall classification and is now in 28th place with more than 33 minutes.
Tomorrow's stage is a 20 kilometer long time trial in Los Angeles.
